July 31, 2023
Let’s be honest. Moving abroad is scary. But there are a few things you can do to help you get over your fear of moving abroad. Let’s jump right on into it!
10 ways to get over your fear of moving abroad:
Visit that country solo for an extended period of time
Invision what your life would look like. Do you like that vision?
Envision your life at an old age… you didn’t move abroad. Will you be regretful?
Realize there’s a difference between being scared to do something and something being a bad idea
Make a plan ahead of arriving there
Do something to put skin in the game and realise a life abroad won’t fall in your lap.
Commit to a specific period of time
I would aim for 6 months to a year. Where were you 6 months ago or 1 year ago. Chances are that time really flew by. If I feel iffy about something, I think about whether I think I could handle it for a few months, and if the answer is yes, I’ll go for it.
Most things are not truly permanent. If you aren’t happy you can ditch the job and apartment and move back immediately. If you needed to. You’re not trapped there.
Plan a trip home to flight homesickness
Not too soon! You need to force yourself to try to acclimate well first!)
Know that to truly get over the fear you just need to dive in head first and just do it.
Accept that some of your friends and family won’t understand why you want to move abroad and that’s okay.
We all have different interest and things we are passionate about and that’s okay that they don’t want to move abroad and you do.
People are afraid of failure and the judgement of others. Are you going to live your life how other people wanted you to live it or are you going to do the things that you want, the things that will make you proud of who you are and who you’re becoming?
